Abstract
The influence of loss of voice on the quality of life after total laryngectomy is very significant. To rehabilitate voice after total laryngectomy, an esophageal voice and an artificial larynx were used frequently. But recently with the
introduction of
tracheoesophageal shunt formation, voice rehabilitation with voice prosthesis has become the most popular procedure.
On the twenty patients undertaken total laryngectomy at Seoul National University Hospital from January 1990 to February 1994, retrospective analysis with reviewing the medical record was performed. The overall success rate of tracheoesophageal
shunt
formation with voice prosthesis was 66% in 24 procedures. The success rate of Provox was higher than Blom-Singer (73%:55.5%). And the complication rate (shunt leakage) of Provox was lower than Blom-Singer (33.3%:44.4%). There was no statistically
significant difference of success rate and complication rate between patients with and without radiation therapy. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:12, 1995)
